Judy Nunez was on staff at Florida State University from 1994 to 2014, serving as student services director for FSU’s School of Theatre and as the director of the 2004 Provost initiative known as, Academic Mapping; a program that tracks undergraduate students through their degree plans. Judy holds a BA in Anthropology, an MA in American & Florida Studies, and an MPA from FSU with a graduate certificate in Emergency Management. While in Florida, she performed various duties for the Monticello Police Department (crime scene/death investigator/ photographer); the C.W. Pound Human Identification Lab in Gainesville, assisted with body identification of the Oklahoma City bombing (1995) and ValueJet flight 592 disaster (1996), among numerous cold cases.

Judy left Florida State in 2014 to return to her native state of Texas as the Director of Recruitment for the College of Geosciences at Texas A&M University (TAMU). Judy taught a first-year seminar on the Global Water Crisis to entering Aggie freshmen each fall. Each spring, Judy supervised the students on water-related experiences in Costa Rica - serving the needs of the local water commissions (ASADAS) through water testing, water conservation, and teaching the WaSH program to rural school children in the surrounding parts of San Ramon, Arenal, and Alajuela. She also served as advisor to the Texas A&M Wine To Water student organization. While at TAMU, Judy organized and managed emergency response efforts with the student organization in Texas and Louisiana following hurricane disasters; such as Hurricanes Harvey and Ida. Individually, Judy was one of five participants selected to participate in multiple international water projects in Tanzania (2015), Costa Rica (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), Ethiopia (2018), and the Dominican Republic (2018, 2019).

Judy left Texas A&M in 2022 to become the volunteer program manager for the NGO Wine To Water where she remained until 2024. While at Florida State, Judy taught for American & Florida Studies with subjects ranging from Sports in America: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly; and Concepts of Southernness. For 17 years and counting, Judy has had the absolute pleasure of mentoring Foundations of Emergency Management (PAD4391), the online core course for the EMHS certificate. And since summer 2024, Judy has been doubly blessed by mentoring International and Comparative Disaster Management (PAD4833) also with the amazing Dr. Janet Dilling! Judy currently splits her time between Texas and Maryland assisting her family in both locations! You might also find her occasionally at an assembly in her grandson’s elementary school in Maryland…doing what, you ask? Well… presenting on the Global Water Crisis… of course!
