Virtual Operations Support Team (FSU.VOST)
Social Media is a part of everyday life, and emergency management is no exception. However, many agencies do not have the manpower to effectively leverage the social media space during and after a disaster. Virtual Operations Support Teams (VOSTs) are a relatively new concept that provides EM agencies and teams an organized cadre of digital volunteers that can assist in media and social media areas. The VOST concept originated "out West" in response to wildfires and is spreading across the world.
The FSU EMHS Program has established the FSU.VOST to support Florida agencies during a disaster. FSU.VOST fulfills two roles. It will be an operational tool for state or local EM agencies, as well as serving as a research platform on how social media and traditional media is utilized in a disaster.
FSU.VOST is staffed by EMHS staff and FSU students. Students from the EMHS Distance Learning Program are encouraged to apply - VOSTs need personnel that are geographically distributed. FSU.VOST staffers do not have to be local to Tallahassee, nor do they have to be currently enrolled students.
