Who We Are

Emergency Management and Homeland Security Program

EMHS has existed as a research center at Florida State since the late 70's - and has been teaching EM courses since 1996. We strive to provide relevant, realistic, and applicable education relating to classic emergency management, terrorism and counter-terrorism and intelligence studies. You can find us on the north-west corner of the sixth floor of the Bellamy Building - start in 637 if you get lost.

Center for Disaster Risk Policy

CDRP is the applied research arm of EMHS. What does that mean? Our faculty, staff and students go out to local, state and Federal agencies and work on emergency management and homeland security projects. We've built statewide bioterrism exercises, facilited plan development, worked in emergency operations centers, and more. This real-world experience comes back into the classroom, making your education more applicable to where you want to go.

Options

Not everyone is a traditional university student - and we like that. We offer classes in the evening and online to fit a variety of schedules and time demands. If you want to take our courses, we can make it happen.

Beyond the Classroom

Get more than a degree! We have opportunities large and small for students to go outside the classroom and experience learning in new ways. Our students have conducted service learning by planning for hurricanes in Haiti, working real disasters in EOCs, training citizens on disaster preparedness in Nepal, and more. Our very own Disaster Incident Research Team (DIRT) and Disaster Intelligence Analysis Laboratory (DIAL) are designed to get students safely into the disaster management environment and learn by doing.

Internships are a key pathway to employment in the field, and our Internship program is robust and effective. Our team of faculty and staff work constantly building relationships with agencies who need interns, developing students for success in the professional environment, and placing qualified students in exciting opportunities. Our students intern in state and local emergency management agencies, U.S. Military Unified Combatant Commands, interagency and military commands, federal agencies, private sector companies, and more. These opportunies are a critical component to a successful career.
